Executive Director at Virginia Conservation Network

The Virginia Conservation Network (VCN), a coalition of 160+ organizations working to protect Virginia’s natural resources, is seeking a strategic, people-centered leader to serve as its next Executive Director.

About VCN
For over 50 years, VCN has united Virginia’s conservation community around a shared agenda on issues including clean water, climate, energy, wildlife, land use, and environmental justice. The organization amplifies its partners’ collective impact through advocacy, communications, and coordination.

The Role
The Executive Director will guide VCN’s next chapter—strengthening partnerships, driving strategic advocacy, and managing an $1.3M budget and a staff of eight. Key responsibilities include:

  • Leading fundraising from foundations, individuals, and member organizations.

  • Cultivating a strong, inclusive statewide network.

  • Managing staff and fostering a collaborative, equitable culture.

  • Representing VCN with policymakers, the media, and allied sectors.

  • Overseeing strategic campaigns and facilitating coalition alignment.

  • Partnering with the Board on governance and fiscal oversight.

Ideal Candidate
The successful candidate is an experienced nonprofit or advocacy leader with 10+ years in environmental policy, public affairs, or community engagement. They bring a proven ability to build coalitions, manage budgets, and raise funds. Strong communication skills, political acumen, and a deep commitment to equity and environmental justice are essential.

Compensation & Benefits

  • Salary: $115,000–$125,000, based on experience.

  • 4 weeks vacation, 5 wellness days, 14 holidays.

  • 100% employer-paid health, dental, and vision coverage (50% for dependents).

  • 4% 403(b) match, 12 weeks paid parental leave, commuter and cell stipends, annual professional development funds.
